Uneven but OK for the price

This is an extensive grab-bag of information. The author must have spent a great deal of time assembling it, but its value is limited by several factors. It's really more like an extensively hyperlinked Web site than a book and doesn't adapt all that well to the Kindle. It's easier if you read it on a PC. The quality and accuracy of the information provided is uneven, and lack of source references makes it difficult to check it. I figure I got my money's worth out of it, but only just.

PREFACE

As the old saying goes, necessity is the mother of invention, and necessity certainly drove the creation of this anthology. As any educator will tell you, one of the difficult duties we face year after year, semester after semester, is the selection of texts for classes. Even in the case of literature courses that cover the writings of "dead white guys" who no longer produce literary works, there is still a continuous stream of secondary books about them and myriad analyses of their writings. In the area of writings by American Indians, this task is even more difficult because of the growing body of secondary sources, of course, but also because of the tremendous increase in the numbers of pieces of literature produced by writers of Native American descent. It is a perplexing quandary when one tries to choose from such a wonderfully rich selection.

Such difficulties also arise when one tries to compile an anthology, and there are some very good examples in print today. Some try to provide the widest coverage: an expansive array of writings from as many nations and tribal groups as possible. Some try to provide an all-inclusive sense of history: coverage from the late eighteenth century to the present. Others center on specific thematic concerns—identity issues, political policies—and thus narrow their scope. Some simply opt for the editors' favorites.

This present endeavor, however, cuts across the various attempts of the past, and it has one simple, perhaps obvious, guiding principle. It was our intention to compile the pieces of literature that our colleagues who teach Native American literature use time and time again. To accomplish this task, we surveyed our colleagues around the globe and asked them to give us a list of their "core" texts. The questionnaires—sent by post and also posted on the Internet—covered all genres and eras. Our only stipulation was that we were looking for complete works of literary art and not "excerpts," that is, sections of longer works, like novels, which rarely stand as discrete units of art. (There are short stories included here that became novel chapters later.) The response was wonderful, and although there were some obviously central authors listed on significant numbers of questionnaires, there was also a great diversity in the recommendations they made.

This may seem to be a very self-serving effort: to create the anthology we always wanted to have. To a degree, this is true, but primarily this book is an attempt to construct an effective introductory collection to written Native literature. In our questionnaire, we asked for lists of pieces used most often because "they work." We did not get into a lengthy attempt to define this vague qualifier, believing that every educator knows when something has a profound, productive effect on a class, an audience. We simply wanted to bring together literary pieces that have this effect, because we also realize that the students who read these pieces of literature in the myriad courses our colleagues teach at a wide array of public and private institutions around the globe constitute the reading public itself; they come from every element of society, cutting across every group distinction employed in the world today: class, gender, race, and political ideology, to name just a few. Nonetheless, the literature speaks personally and compellingly to them, and that is a remarkable achievement.

Not what I was expecting...

The book just arrived but when I took it out of the package and opened it, some of the pages that have been ripped off were hanging. There are also some pages that have been written on. This, I was unaware of since it did not say in the description. Overall, I am dissatisfied with the quality of this book.

It came in time for class, and it meets all my requirements. But mostly, they have collected some outstanding works by amazing authors. That they are Native American adds poignancy, due to the subject matter that is repeated as a theme, throughout this anthology. I love this book, it is one of my favorites now, and I'll keep it as long as I can, as the material is so great.

A Must Read!

Jeremy Bates’ World’s Scariest Places series is always a pre-order for me. I’ve read enough of his books now to know what I’m in for: a fast paced and scary read set in a real (and creepy) location.

Island of the Dolls was no exception. As usual, Bates gives us a character we care about and plunks them down in the middle of an eerie and dangerous situation. The setting itself was stellar. Isla de las Munecas is a real place and is on my travel list, but I think I just may leave this book at home when I finally get there.

The mystery itself is well done. Bates does a great job of mixing past real life horrors with today’s superstition. It was very creepy and it took me longer than it should have to figure out the reason behind our murderous mystery.

If I didn’t have to go to work, this would have been a one-sitting read. As it was, I read this late into the night last night, completely unwilling to stop until I had finished it.

I can’t wait for whatever scares Bates throws us in his next book!

Book characters are all the same

I've read three of his books & the characters are the same: the protagonist is a very tall, fit male with a tendency for fisticuffs with another male character who is the story's a-hole. Foreign female hottie who had a thing for the very tall male. Very tall male's girlfriend is a total jerk or acts like one to get back at VTM. However, the books have a good, "explainable" twist for each scariest place location. My advice to the author: Come up with new characters.

Great fun

I always really enjoy Mr. Bates books and this is no exception. Combine a scary place and building tension along with being stranded and watch the characters show their true selves. A great read with a satisfying ending.

Thorough and intriguing

The level of detail in this book is just right. It provides complete and rigorous proofs without getting bogged down in too much detail. In addition to some other knot theory standards, it has an excellent section on 3-manifold invariants arising from the Temperley-Lieb algebra. This book is appropriate for those who have a knowledge of algebraic topology.

Best book out there for Knot Theory, go for it!

I had always felt the need to understand knot theory or at least to have an introductory knowledge of it. Knots, ever since I met them have intrigue me and fascinate as how those weird entangled pieces of string, i.e. in other words their funny and beautiful shapes, can be formulated in a quantitative way through the use of mathematics, specially the topological invariants of polynomials were my concern. They were a real mystery to me as I suppose Quantum Mechanics was a mystery to me when I was at high school. Well, the story is that I had tried several books to dive into knot theory but it was complete failure until I pick this book. I must say though, that when I did it I already had a knowledge of Algebraic Topology which is needed. Before saying anything else I must tell you that I am a physicist and so I have not try to understand every proof to every proposition, lemma and theorem but just to read it as a novel learning facts here and there. I also, as a physicist had a special interest in the Jones Polynomial since it pops up in topological quantum field theory thanks to the work of Edward Witten. So, what can I say? I only read the first 6 chapters (It has 16 in total) and I'm satisfy because I did encounter and comprehend the Jones polynomial and also the Alexander polynomial. Chapter 1 "A Beginning for Knot Theory" is very nice, it gives you a general flabour and taste of different elements that are used in knot theory like the definition of the Redemeister moves, what is a Link, the linking number, prime knots, pretzel knots, conway characterization of a knot through continued fractions etc; Chapter 2 "Seifert Surfaces and Knot Factorization" essentially introduces the notion of a Seifert surface associated to a knot which is basically a connected oriented surface which has the knot as its boundary, Chapter 3 "The Jones Polynomial" introduces to the reader this polynomial which is a topological invariant constructed out of the 'bracket polynomial' (which is not an invariant) and the "writhe" of the knot, which is essentially a number that has to do with the over and under crosses of the knot (basically the sum of them); Chapter 4 "Geometry of Alternating Links" introduces notions associated to alternating knots; Chapter 5 "The Jones Polynomial of an Alternating Link" gives some facts about alternating links and the J.P. and finally (the last chapter I read) Chapter 6 "The Alexander Polynomial" introduces this other (older than Jones) topological invariant of a knot which is defined as the determinant of certain complicated matrix associated to the number of crossing of the knot which are found when transversing a curve which is a generator (in the sense of Homology) of the Seifert surface associated to the given knot, I would gladly had keep on reading further but I realize that I had to come back to physics (Quantum Field Theory, General Relativity and Quantum Gravity) and also to religion and my spiritual growth so having encountered the Jones and Alexander polynomials I felt satisfied and I decided to put it back on my shelf for a while (whether it will be short or long I don't know), but it is a nice written text so my suggestion for you is: go for it you won't regret it!

I have many Oracle books, but this one is by far my favorite. I recommend the newest version of this book if available, but I have trouble spending that much money on any book. This is my go-to reference for any Oracle or SQL questions. It is very thorough and easy to follow. It is easy to find pretty much anything I'm looking for.

This is the one I've been waiting for. It's got coverage of the 9i features like external tables and updates the older chapters to include features. I hadn't even heard about multitable inserts before this book. The CD has 9i R2 docs as well as the book scripts. Overall, more in-depth coverage than the 9i New Features book but the new features are more integrated to old text so you may have to read a little more but it's worth it.

Highly recommend this book written by Eric Jones, he has been my instructor and his ability to communicate not only swing thoughts, but strategic golf concepts is excellent!! Of all instructors I have had over the years by far Eric is the best, primarily due to his communication skills creating mental imagery to help the learner better understand how to improve!

The book play Strategic Golf provides course navigation ideas to help any level golfer manage their way around each hole and the entire course! The book provides loads of great suggestions and pictorial layouts to show you the "how to".

For anyone looking to improve their game, this book is a must read, it is short, easy to understand and provides great concepts everyone can use on any golf course to improve their scoring!

I've just bought it and read it in one day.
The approach of knowing your carry / roll and total distance is key and well stressed in the book.
I also really liked the management of the angle of aiming toward the green and to correctly place your ball on the tee box. These "simple" things helped me to birdie the 18th hole of my home course yesterday by just thinking about the placement of the ball, was a great way to finish :-)
The book is extremely affordable and worth it.

A Must Read for Any Golfer wanting to improve!!!

Always heard TV announcers talking about "ideal landing areas" "short siding" and "staying patient"... never realized what all that meant until I read this book! Great explanations of hole design (from both the course architect AND player's point of views). Translated a hole's weaknesses and strengths and the best way to navigate them.

I've not looked (or played) a golf course since then the same way. I now understand the way the hole was 'meant' to be played and what shots are needed. 2-3 stroke improvement alone with no other changes...

Recommend for any and all golfers!
