Great Introduction to the Truth of the Kingdom of God

This book is definitely worth the buy and the read. This is a book you don't want to read all the way through in a hurry. However, if you do, I recommend you go back and study. If you study while you read it, read the scriptures and pay close attention to the explanations, you will be blessed. The kingdom is invisible and so is the king. The way Apostle Eckhardt causes you to connect the dots of the scriptures and the explanations he give are clear, straight to the point, and not over your head. I particularly loved Chapter 7 most of all. I was truly blessed. I care not to spoil it for you, but he explains in the most basic way (I think), the kingdom and the king, the importance of worship, the ongoing advancement for generations, the simplicity of the gospel, and the need for the spiritual gifts today. The kingdom of God is not at a geographical place, but everywhere and for everyone. I recommend this awesome read.

I haven't finished this yet - but its pretty much a lot of what i already know- I've studied the kingdom for a while so this is a good book - I was looking for something more in depth- its a good easy to read book

The alien androgyny, the spiritual eroticism, the royal conceit: the outsized persona of the artist currently known as Prince fascinates on numerous levels. In this detailed biography by journalist and attorney Hahn, anecdotes of a personal nature mix with close readings of Prince's musical output, producing few big secrets but plenty of insight. Prince's early days are recounted as a frenzy of musical education, with influences ranging from the funky dexterity of Sly Stone, to the tight perfectionism of James Brown, to the spiritual yearning of Stevie Wonder. (Hahn also names a less obvious influence in Joni Mitchell, whose lyrics Prince apparently purloined sometimes whole cloth.) The young Prince also absorbs the mechanics of the studio like a sponge. When the child prodigy meets with early success, signing to Warner Brothers at age 19, he blossoms into the personality of flamboyant and controlling self-absorption that fans have now watched mutate for over two decades. Constructed from interviews with producers, sound engineers, journalists and publicists, though not as frequently with Prince's inner circle, the book portrays Prince as a kind of outsider artist, eccentric and self-centered to the extreme, rarely leaving the enchanted, Minneapolis garden of his childhood, where he has managed to build himself into a living, protean god. In the late 1970s, Minnesotan Prince Rogers Nelson began releasing funk-fortified albums on which he was the only musician and singer. First as an underground phenomenon, then as a much-hyped purveyor of a new kind of excruciatingly danceable, sexy music, he became a pop phenomenon. He shed two-thirds of his name, formed a series of bands, made some movies, and eventually dropped his name entirely, preferring to identify himself with an unpronounceable symbol. Then he feuded with his record company, inaugurating a series of negative career moves that rivaled Mike Tyson's in self-destructiveness and rendered him little more than fodder for late-night TV wisecracks. Hahn covers this ascent and descent in gritty detail, thanks to sources that include many Prince collaborators, though not the incredibly funky Apollonia, Morris Day, or George Clinton (whose career Prince restarted in the 1990s). Considering the longevity of rock careers these days, Prince might rebound yet. Still, he has left his mark on rock style as well as music, and Hahn has given us the arc of that mark. Mike Tribby

Leaves You Cold And Wanting More

A meticulously engaging biography of Prince, "Possessed" pulls the reader in and won't let go. This is the portrait of a genius who, through his own machinations, became something of a monster. The book tells the story of a Prince who is self-destructive, narcissistic, insecure and cloistered; a prodigy who changed music while managing to alienate virtually everyone in his life.
By 1982-83, Prince had forced the world to sit up and take notice. Having skillfully blended elements of numerous musical genres to create a uniquely eclectic signature, he was determined to avoid being pigeonholed by a limited artistic identity. This determination, combined with his rising popularity and enigmatic, iconoclastic image began to raze traditional barriers. All of this culminated in and peaked with "Purple Rain"- a body of work that enjoyed universal appeal and propelled him to the top of the pop/rock world. But, ironically, he rebelled (in a sense) against his own success, deciding to follow "Purple Rain"with "Around The World In A Day", a work designed to remind everyone that commercial success could and would be subordinate to the importance of innovative artistry. These reinventions continued, accompanied by critical praise and declining sales, and in the midst of a musical landscape that was ever-changing. In this sense, at least from a commercial perspective, Prince became the victim of a new music world he'd been instrumental in creating.
Published in 2003, this bio ends in 2002. The story of Prince between 1989 and that year is not a pretty one, giving chilling accounts of his treatment others, from subordinates and band members to the Warner Brothers executives who'd helped make him a star. One consistent and recurring theme is his inability to treat those around him with empathy- sometimes common courtesy. By the mid 90's, he'd alienated most everyone and, as he became ever more insular, his creativity suffered along with his image.
But it seems that none of this mattered much to Prince. From the beginning, it seems that total control was his ultimate aim and, in the end, that's exactly what he got. The genius and success of his first ten years as a recording artist provided a lifelong security blanket, one that apparently made him bulletproof regardless of his actions.
Though "Scathing" (as one critic described this book) "Possessed" is written with no obvious agenda. One would be a fool to call it complimentary to Prince on balance, but it does cover his charitable deeds and contributions, his struggles to open up, and flashes of a guy who could be nice. If you don't find Prince Rogers Nelson an interesting character, this biography is certain to change your mind. If you do, then this work should be on your must-read list, because you ain't seen nothing yet.

Rave Un2 the "Enigma" Fantastic...

The epitomy of the classic "rock star", Prince has seemingly taken an inspired career and turned it into a sort of ironic mystery...author Alex Hahn presents this theory using an amazing access to personal subjects and un-released music to destroy the mystique and bring Prince into the general public's eye for all to scrutinize. What we find is a sort of mini-demagogue who remains brilliant musically, but suffers from many years of petulant behavior to systematically reduce his faithful following and, unfortunately, become nothing more than a cult figure.
Back in 1985, however, the thought of Prince being anything but a major musical influence and icon would be inconceivable...this was following the final push to superstardom that "Purple Rain", the record and movie, provided and the country/music industry was agog at what the next Prince project might be. Of course, the underwhelming and self-aggrandizing "Around the World in a Day" was the next release and this started the downward spiral that continues to this day. Author Hahn attempts to analyze this with "Possessed" and he brings it off with an amazing balance...remaining true to his literary responsibilites, he paints a realistic and forthcoming picture of the tortured musician. At once brilliant in the conceiving and performing of cutting edge music while at the same time displaying a curious bewilderment at the ever changing face of popular music, Prince remains the mystery that he so fervently relishes and in the process has virtually destroyed any fan base that could resurrect his career.
A stunningly comprehensive biography, Hahn shows the entire Prince career from his childhood up to and including the 2001 release of "The Rainbow Children". Riding the emotional and psychological roller-coaster that was Prince, we see the meteoric rise and subsequent demise of this influential artist and also the human waste he laid as a side product...his (Prince's) treatment of "friends and associates" is disturbing and speakes to (in my opinion) a lingering psychosis. Conversely, Hahn, again using amazing access to unreleased recorded material, shows Prince to be prolific and brilliant in his conception of and performance of many major turns in his musicianship. Indeed, the few unreleased tracks that I have personally heard would make for a great album and it's hard to conceive that this level of great music is still "in the vault".
Hahn covers all the important episodes in this star-crossed career...even sharing some new information that former "hard-core" fans never knew...the homosexual relationship of Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman was new to me and I was a fan at the inception of the "Revolution"...the interaction of fellow musicians and subsequent denial of artistic credit (i.e. Rosie Gaines and Melvoin) is part of this afore mentioned disturbing psychotic behavior and was also a surprise to me. What astounded me the most, however, was the continued denial on the part of Prince towards the burgeoning rate of change in the popular music world and his denail of this fact. He continued to think that he was one record away from the "Purple Rain" type of mega-stardom and Hahn presents this part of the story in sober terms...I certainly felt the frustration that most fans assuredly went through and this feeling is the most prevelant throughout this work. Time and again, a new idea or initiative was started by Prince, only to be reduced or disintegrated by the ever-present "haughtiness" that only served to limit his career growth and is something that he continues to pay for in his musical standing today.
Hahn does serve the music fan well, however, with his many reviews of some of Prince's classic music...he raves about "Controversy", "1999", "Sign O the Times" and, of course "Purple Rain". Some of the later works ("Graffiti Bridge", "Lovesexy" and "Emancipation") that I thought were pure genius were sort of described as episodic and partly rationalized into the spiraling downward turn in Prince's career and music...unfairly, I felt, but an opinion that I respected given the depth of Hahn's research. Closing out the book is an impressive discography of all Prince's works and his part assisitance in others (Bangles, Stevie Nicks, Sheena Easton...etc).
Whether you love him or hate him...or even if you're just a popular music fan in general, you'd do well to read about the rise and fall of Prince in this book. A more interesting story you won't find (yes even given the latest Michael Jackson fiascos) and a story that has you at once criticising and conversely hoping for a more fortunate outcome, Alex Hahn is to be commended for a comprehensive, scholarly and entertaining look at one of Rock's remianing mysteries. I recommend this book very highly.

If this was just a collection of his games, I would be high on the book. However, the authors took things to another level by offering 80 of his finest games, but also making each one a lesson. The notes are simple and clear, and the writers go out of their way to explain all the key positional features so you can follow what's going on and learn from it. Endgame masterpieces from a Swedish Zen master

Had always wondered why there is no book on Ulf Andersson's games.
The only available source for Andersson's games before this book is
Aagard's "Excelling at Chess" and Pritchett and Kopec's "Best Games
of the Young Grandmasters". The wait is over! The current book offers
a deep look into Andersson's subtle positional (and very technical)
chess with incredibly many useful endgame ideas.

Agreed with Yermolinsky's comments that Andersson is a cult figure.
Polugaevsky even said (comments at the end of the book) that no one
[in the Soviet Union] plays like him. His endgame technique has been
compared to Capablanca, Rubinstein, Smyslov and Karpov.

It is unfortunate that Andersson is too modest to author his own game
collections. But the authors had done a nice job of letting the games speak
for themselves. They are organized according to thematic concepts.
The games in the book are not unlike Tal's games which tactically contain
mind-boggling ideas; Andersson's games also contain some mind-boggling
positional ideas (some are counter-intuitive and as daring as sacrificial
attacks: simply check the chapter on positional Queen sacrifices).

This is an excellent book for anyone who appreciates subtle technical chess
and beautiful endgames. This book is as enjoyable as Shereshevsky's classic.

Good book of strategic chess

I played through all the games of this book (80 of them) and really liked it. Andersson's style seems deceptively simple. In many endgame positions which to me seemed drawn or difficult to win because of my lack of technical skills, Andersson wins in logical fashion and makes it look easy. The analysis was well aimed at a player of my strength, 1700-1800, and it did not bury me.
The book has 15 chapters based on theme, for example: playing against two weaknesses, an advantage in space, control of the d-file, fighting against the hedgehog, the art of defense, the Catalan endgame, rook endings, and various others.
Andersson's openings as White are mostly 1 Nf3 2 c4 3 g3 with an English Opening resulting. This move order also works against the Tarrasch Defense, Queens's Indian and King's Indian. He plays the Catalan if Black plays ...Nf6, ...e6, ...d5. He usually answers 1 Nf3 d5 with 2 d4. He is willing to go into the Sicilian Maroczy bind after playing Nf3 and c4 by playing e4 and d4 if Black heads that way.
I actually finished this book, which does not happen with most of my chess books, and I think the design of the book and the approach of the authors is part of the reason. It was more enjoyable than I expected.

The games of Ulf Anderson are the highlight ... the rest is very uneven

This book has gotten very good reviews both here on Amazon and other sources such as New In Chess (publisher of the book) and my input takes a slightly different perspective.

The book itself is based on the games from Grandmaster Ulf Anderson. Anderson in his prime was a top 5 player in the world and has played the world elite from the past 30+ years. The games of Anderson are well worth studying and the authors certainly picked a ripe and fresh topic using Anderson's games. The book steps through a series of strategic themes that are fairly typical of books on strategies. No real shockers in the list but I will shortly make some mention of additions specific to Anderson. The book starts with an intro from Peter Leko, the Hungarian world title contender. It's very prophetic when he says in the intro that he played a number of moves and really didn't see how he ultimately lost against Anderson. Other players back this observation up with a notable quote from IM Mark Dvoretsky saying something similar. This in fact is part of the problem with the book.

Why is that a problem??

Well, in games where there are a number of strategical subtleties, it really takes an advanced player to understand them. I actually think that a club player studying Anderson's game can learn a tremendous amount about strategic play wrapping up most of Nimzowitch's lessons from My System. Unfortunately, the authors are very clumsy in the way that they handle the games and the annotations. They definitely provided an interesting mechanism by pausing in the games to ask about the next move, but often there are a number of points in the game where subtleties occur with absolutely no mention. Very oddly, the authors will go into very long variations and points in the game where there is no mention at all what the strategic or tactical plan is for that 15 to 20 move sequence (ending either with an unexplained positional assessment or a reference to a single played game for that variation). Well, long sequences with assessments is an indication that a computer was used for analysis and then likely checked by the author. This really is not very valuable for me personally because I could simply take a game of Ulf Anderson from a game database and used the computer to look at possible moves.

Other structural problems included the preable to each chapter with a summary of the games and critical moves. For me, this is just annoying because I'd much rather have the authors give this preamble prior to the actual game with some better outline of the overall game plan for each side (or something). In fact, many to most of the games, the authors really didn't point out where the game was really slipping into a lost position. I know that some might argue with this point, but because so many moves were not really looked at critically, you could see trends well before the authors put in annotations that said something like "all other alternatives are also bad". The annotations did improve as the book progressed but I highly doubt that the club player really can try and play like Ulf Anderson unless they spend a tremendous number hours on technique. And this is really the point. Ulf Anderson had superb technique. He generally simplified positions through trades and took advantage of a subtle positional advantage. Often this advantage was perhaps in a slightly better than equal position. It should be noted that many of the games are not with heavy hitting GMs, so you may suffer from not recognizing quite a few of his opponents. In some games, the opponents made highly dubious moves and that is when the author's paused with their highlighted box asking "what do you think Ulf did and why?". The problem is that the club player to get to those positions is likely to make a considerably larger number of mistakes and therefore may find a single move in a position that he can't navigate into against an opponent of decent strength. The book could have easily been a selection of game positions with critical choices followed by a detailed explanation of the factors going into the "turning point".

With all that said, the true audience for this book is really a very narrow set of players that can fill in a lot of their analyses and details. Even Luke McShane in his New In Chess review of the book waved off the analyses and annotations of the authors and cited a position "buried" in unannotated game moves. Any player with attention for detail will in fact do the same thing challenging many unnannotated moves. The book does provide one the games to do such a thing, but so would a database. I don't want to be overly hard on the authors, they took on one of the most daunting tasks, using Ulf Anderson's games as the vehicle for their teaching. The book could easily have been called "How Ulf Anderson Squeezed Out Wins with Small Positional Advantages". However, there isn't a consistency through the games or themes to really say that they did better than a 3 star job in doing that.

Because the book is primarily about technique, the authors included some chapters on the endgame including one on the Catalan endgame. Endgames often are where positional themes start to fall apart with (in my opinion and as offered in the book Endgame Strategy by Shereshevsky)is about taking advantage of multiple weaknesses. Anderson really understood how to do this extremely well and furthermore, had a great nack for creating additional weaknesses.

So, in summary ... I'm very happy that I went through the games of Ulf Anderson, definitely feel that I've learned a great deal from the book, but I am disappointed in the overall annotations and positional assessment explanations in the book. This is partly because authors that try and stay "theme-oriented" often muddle the works because most games have multiple themes. There are very few games where one of the players does not have the advantage of giving his opponent two weaknesses. How many games aren't critically affected by the decision of the knight/bishop exchange? The list goes on and so the better books don't actually try and classify these things but instead help the student RECOGNIZE positions with potential for transformation. This is a tough skill to learn and even tougher to teach, but Ulf Anderson is perhaps the best that chess has ever offered in this area (other players include Fischer, Capablanca both who could squeeze out the advantage in any position).

I conditionally recommend this book to those students who really can critically examine EVERY move of Anderson's games and extract as much value as possible from the author's comments. But using Anderson as a model for play could result in a great many losses or draws because so much skill is required to take advantage of subtle positional advantages.

As I say in many of reviews of chess books, the price for the chess lessons in this book are extremely inexpensive and it really is time that is the deciding point on whether you'll really get something out of this book.

PS If you are a Reti player or English opening or hedgehog, they make up the majority of games in this book. I would caution you that the annotations on these openings are poor relatively to the work of Shipov (Hedgehog, five star book) or even McDonald's book on the Reti (3 star but still much better). Of course Marin's three volume set leaves all annotations on the English looking sub-standard including this book.

Unbelievable!

I just started reading both The Complete Private Pilot (TCPP) and The Pilot's Manual:Ground School (TPMGS) in preparation to attend flight school. Please note that I have just begun reading corresponding topics in both books. Weights and balances. Both books use an example of an aircraft with differing wing weight loads but making the same 60 degree bank turn. TCPP'S weight example(page 8-2) is 2500 lbs.. TCPP states that under a load factor 2G the gain is only 1000 lbs while TPMGS's example(page 235) is an aircraft weighing 3000 lbs has an additional gain of 3000 lbs under the same load factor, double it's wing level load.
Do you see the difference? TPMGS claims it doubles under a 2G turn load factor while TCPP suggests only a 40% gain.

Who do I believe? Which book do I rely on for accurate information? Remember, I just started reading these books today. I truly hope this is the only discrepancy I find.
