About the Author

Dr. Fang Lin Luo, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor with the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. He is a fellow of the Cambridge Philosophical Society and a senior member of IEEE. He has published 12 textbooks and 308 technical papers in IEE/IET Proceedings and IEEE Transactions as well as in various international conferences. Dr. Luo is currently the associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics and IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics. He is also the editor of the international journal Advanced Technology of Electrical Engineering and Energy. His research interests include power electronics and DC and AC motor drives with computerized artificial intelligent (AIC) control and digital signal processing (DSP) as well as AC/DC, DC/DC, and AC/AC converters and DC/AC inverters, renewable energy systems, and electrical vehicles.

Dr. Hong Ye, Ph.D., is a Research Fellow at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. She is a member of the IEEE and has coauthored 12 books. Dr. Ye has published more than 80 technical papers in IEEE Transactions, IEE Proceedings, and other international journals, as well as in various international conferences. Her research interests include power electronics and conversion technologies, signal processing, operations research, and structural biology.

Better than any other book on the subject currently available

...because there are really only two, and this one is better than the other one.
Don't get me wrong. I have purchased and really enjoy this book. But if there were as many books out there on "Blaxploitation" films as there are on Hitchcock or Spielberg films, this one would probably fall in the middle of the road, quality-wise. But the fact is that there are only two books I know of that cover the genre as a whole--this one and "Black Action Films" by James Robert Parish and George A. Hill, available from McFarland in a VERY overprices "library binding" edition. (Another book on the subject, "What it is, What it Was" by Andres Chavez, is also very good but is really a picture book with a few interviews thrown in). While "Black Action Films" has more in-depth listings, "Blaxploitation Cinema" is the much more informative and better-written volume.

But "Blax" could have been a lot better. The book is basically broken down into three sections: 1) interviews with directors famous for Blaxploitation; 2) color reproductions of BLX movie posters and 3) short columns on the films in question. The interviews, I hate to say, kind of suck. The participants are game, but the author shoots them each basically the same bland questions indicating he had little knowledge of the individual's career beforehand ("How do you feel about the term 'Blaxploitation'?"). The poster art section is very good, but if that's what you want, the aforementioned "What it is.." is the better purchase. And the section on the individual films, while well-written, includes too many films that are not in any way "Blaxploitation" or even "Black" films (a problem "Black Action" has as well). "Silver Streak," for example, though it features a black actor, Richard Pryor, is in no way a part of the blaxploitation genre.

But on the whole and in spite of its comparably minor flaws, this is a very entertaining book on a subject that gets too little serious attention.

Glad I discovered this book!

Developing ideas for a radio show about movies I stumbled across this title and knew it would have some great ideas. Had no idea there were so many different films produced during the blaxploitation era! The still photos from the films and the poster art along with the text was a great balance. I especially enjoy reading the taglines of the films. The information on actors, directors, film composers,..etc. excellent. So glad some of the directors from the blaxploitation era were interviewed and included. Look forward to hearing more from book developer, Josiah Howard!

Charles Marie Georges Huysmans, más conocido como Joris-Karl Huysmans (París, 1848 - ibídem, 1907), fue un escritor francés. Los trabajos de Huysmans expresan un disgusto por la vida moderna y un profundo pesimismo, especialmente su obra más conocida, A contrapelo (À rebours, 1884).

Descendiente de una larga línea de pintores flamencos, Huysmans tuvo una juventud dolorosa (su madre se volvió a casar con un hombre de negocios, protestante: Jules Og). Empezó a estudiar leyes, tras ingresar como funcionario del Ministerio del Interior.

Publicó por su cuenta en 1874 un conjunto de poemas titulado Le Drageoir à épices. Sus primeras novelas, como Marta (1876) y Las hermanas Vatard (1879), estaban inspiradas por el Naturalismo de Émile Zola. Acudía a las veladas del grupo de Médan, para el que colaboró con un cuento, La mochila al hombro sobre sus recuerdos militares. El libro colectivo publicado: Las veladas de Médan constituye de hecho el manifiesto del naturalismo.

Empieza a mover su perspectiva. Escribe unos Croquis parisiens de valía. Nuevas obras como En ménage, 1881, y al año siguiente A vau l'eau (A la deriva o Aguas abajo) están llenas de vidas insípidas, muy contemporáneas e implacablemente descritas. Ya resalta su disgusto por un mundo moderno compuesto, dice, por bribones e imbéciles. Le guiaba el pesimismo de Schopenhauer.

En A contrapelo (1884), con distintas traducciones, famosa novela que se convirtió en modelo del decadentismo más exquisito, rompe claramente con la estética naturalista; pues las tendencias al artificio por parte del hiperestésico, descontentadizo e hipercrítico protagonista, Des Esseintes, son otros tantos impulsos hacia un ideal de vida.

but ............may be it was not the moment for me
anyway recommend this author.
