A damn good book on practical magic in the modern world.

The Chaos Protocols- Gordon White

The short form: This is a really, really good book. Highly recommended.

What makes it a good book (and particularly a good chaos magic book) are a number of things.

1. Context. The context in which we work now is different from the one in which I first came in contact with chaos magic. Gordon References Stephen Mace’s Stealing the Fire from Heaven which was an early influence on my own work. I bought my copy after reading some of Mace’s article in Chaos International, sending cash to Mr. Mace who sent me what I think I recall as a velo bound book obviously hand typed with illustrations hand set & then photocopied. I think the process took about six weeks in total. A very different time! Consider this again when we look at Crowley, Carroll, Levi, etc. Things change fast. We live & work in a different setting, and our work should reflect that while not rejecting what is effective from the past, which this book does in spades.

Whether you agree 100% with Gordon’s assessment of the current state of the world (I’m probably in the high 90’s personally), this is a damn good thing for most anyone with a magical worldview to read. More important than the technical aspects in most cases.

2. Focus. The book is focused on ‘success’ in a particularly weird economic time, the work & working contained are very much pointed in this direction, in appropriately lateral ways. At the same time, it is a good generalist work, as really all work ‘should’ be pointed towards success, yes? We are not enchanting to fail, right?

3. Technical approaches. In a nice variation from a lot of views on chaos magic, much of the ‘ritual’ bits are modifications of or use parts from VERY old texts, from the PGM, Treatise of Solomon, and Orphic Hymns. These things just work, and to me chaos magic has always been about using what works. Also no fear of of using Judeo-Christian bits, and correcting some of the whack around that.

4. Actual ritual bits. These are well devised, and will certainly work if applied intelligently. A nice section on sigils that while mostly available on the Rune Soup blog would have been an error to leave from the book. This stuff works if you work with it, and this is a nice, simple, wank-free approach. Good stuff. If you aren’t already using Gordon’s shoaling & robofish methods, perhaps this will get you to try them. They work.

5. Probability. This is one of the cornerstones that often gets ignored and causes folk’s metaphorical houses to get all wonky and dropped pens to roll from the living room off into the garage where they are swallowed by a giant crack never to be seen again. Metaphorically speaking.

In closing, the strategic approaches and explanation of working with probabilities, luck generation, and Becoming Invincible are all gold. The ritual and technical bits are very good, and give a nice, compact tool set to do nearly anything that one would want to approach from a magical perspective. Some of these will be brought into my own work to see how they play with what I already do, and that really almost never happens, and that is about the highest praise I can give a book.

This one gets added to Visual Magick: A Manual of Freestyle Shamanism by Jan Fries, The Oracle Travels Light by Camelia Elias, and Protection and Reversal Magic by Jason Miller, and Draja Mickaharics books as my top suggestions for general books on magic as I see it in practice.

The Chaos Protocols

I have to say *this* is a step forward for Chaos Magick. I've been out of the chaos loop for a few years for some reasons but this book showed me how someone CAN avoid Carrol, Hines and Julian whoever he is and the incoherent leftist ego maniacal mentally diseased mumbo jumbo that comes out of their brains.

Mr. White offers an excellent concise and specific guide for the economically crumbling age that we are going through right now. This book should interest people who want to know more about the global economy (in general) and how that affects their personal financial situation. The 1st chapter is dedicated entirely to this and it is actually very well written with deep knowledge of the subject (and at the same time you don't need a degree in economics to read)

He continues by turning to consciousness and scientific quantum theories and then moves on with spiritual/magical terms and practices. I will admit that the pattern he uses in writing this book is very appealing to me even when my brain refuses to pay attention during his economic lessons so much so that i decided to re-read from the start and pay *attention* this time. All in all an unexpected (for me) excellent piece of CM writing.

Gordon once again knocks one over the fence, presenting us with a spell book that dares to treat the readers like intelligent adults. It starts us off not with any New Age claptrap but a dash of cold water in the face, in the form of some sober economic observations. He follows up his dark grey forecast with a mix of sound economic advice and some practical magic designed to pull the odds in your favor. This is no get-rich-quick screed, but a level-headed approach to survive some major economic changes coming in the near future, if not already here.

Short story by Stephen Crane, published serially in Collier's Weekly (Nov. 26-Dec. 3, 1898), and then in the collection The Monster and Other Stories (1899). Combining symbolic imagery with naturalistic detail, it is an existential tale about human vanities and delusions. As the story opens, three visitors find shelter from a blizzard at Pat Scully's hotel in Fort Romper, Neb.: a nervous New Yorker known as the Swede, a rambunctious Westerner named Bill, and a reserved Easterner called Mr. Blanc. The Swede becomes increasingly drunk, defensive, and reckless. He beats Scully's son, Johnnie, in a fight after accusing him of cheating at cards. When the Swede accosts a patron of a bar, he is stabbed and killed. The story ends ambiguously at a point several months later, when timid Mr. Blanc confesses to Bill that he feels somewhat responsible for the Swede's death because he failed to act when he saw that Johnnie was indeed cheating at cards. -- The Merriam-Webster Encylopedia of Literature

About the Author
American author Stephen Crane began writing early in life, and was already a published author by the age of sixteen. Among Crane s best known works are Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, which is considered to be the first literary work in the early American tradition of Naturalism, a literary movement marked by detailed realism and the acknowledgement of social conditions of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and The Red Badge of Courage, which was influenced by his own experiences in military school and personal contact with Civil-War veterans. Crane died in 1900 at the age twenty-eight of tuberculosis, but had a significant and lasting impact on twentieth-century literature, influencing early modernist writers such as Ernest Hemingway.

The Way It Is

Crane, Stephen. The Blue Hotel

Stephen Crane’s long short story is a much anthologised item, it being typical of his masculine focussed social Darwinism, or survival of the fittest philosophy. Here, a character known simply as The Swede is the focus of the five major players in the story, set in an isolated settlement in The Blue Hotel in Fort Romper, Nebraska. Life is tough in winter in Romper and a man needs all his wits, and probably a handy weapon, simply to survive. The Swede is nervous to the point of hysteria. Pat Scully, the hotel keeper, his son Johnnie, the Easterner and the cowboy are shocked by the Swede’s insistent nervous laughter and his compulsive fear of being murdered. While Scully is out meeting any likely customers from the train, and over a card game, the Swede accuses Johnnie of cheating, which leads to a challenge and a fight outside in the blizzard.

‘Kill him, Johnnie! Kill him!, shouts the cowboy, as the contestants grapple, until finally Johnnie falls. But encouraged by his father he continues, until overpowered at last by the heavier man, and left to ‘the mixture of sympathy and abuse’ of the women. The Swede leaves in triumph for another bar, where he boasts about what he’d done to Scully’s son, but his unwilling audience shun him and his bravado, declining his offer of a drink together. This infuriates the drunken Swede, who threatens a gambler and in a struggle is pierced by a long knife. This ‘citadel of virtue, of virtue, wisdom, power, was pierced as easily as if it had been a melon,’ we are told, and its innocent murderer is, we learn in the final section given the lenient sentence of three years in jail.

There is no moral to the story. Given the setting and the characters it’s a sequence of likely events. Neither the demon drink nor the violence in nature is to blame. Anger, fear, jealousy and the need to impose on others are inescapable. That’s just the way it is.

Starting to go back and read some of the "masters" to increase my depth and knowledge of writing styles. Short story with an interesting plot line of paranoia and self fulling prophecy at the end. Highly recommend for a quick read on a flight on an hour or more.

Rodney R. Hutton is Professor of Old Testament at Trinity Lutheran Seminary (Columbus, Ohio). He is the author of Charisma and Authority in Israelite Society (Fortress Press, 1994), and co-author of Covenants and Care: Boundaries in Life, Faith, and Ministry (Fortress Press, 1998).

Helpful little volume on the prophets!

Hutton has written a helpful little introduction to the prophets. He accepts the prophets as real persons even if filtered by the work of later editors. The author accepts many standard tenants of historical criticism. Such positions as the sign of Josiah (1 Kings 13) being a "fabricated story," (34) and Isaiah's angel of the Lord an embellishment of a historical account show his anti-supernatural bias. Hutton continues to propagate the false dichotomy between oracles of judgment as marks of a true prophet and oracles of hope as indications of later additions. The primary message of each book rather than its structure or genre is the emphasis of the author's treatment and Hutton often provides helpful insights in his discussion. For example, his comment on Micah and preaching (verb nataf) is a nice summary. All in all the book is a nice read and would be quite helpful to any seeking an overview of the Old Testament prophetic books. It is especially recommended as a complement to some of the longer introductions.

This is the first book I'd read that sepcifically dealt with Old Testament prophets their likenesses and their differences. It was easy to read and a quick read. I loved it! I only wished it had covered more prophets, but it only covered prophets during a certain time period. I'd recommend it.

The U.S. State Department estimates 800,000 victims, mostly women and children, are trafficked for sex trade across nations each year and millions more are trafficked within countries - including the U.S., Britain, Spain, and the Netherlands. As a Seattle Times reporter explained when Maria's case hit the news there, the reality is that sex slaves for the most part are young women and teenaged girls who come from almost every one of the world's poorer countries and end up in almost every country where there is a combination of sexual demand and money. But they are also in undeveloped Africa, in prisons internationally, locked in forced marriages, or sold to men by parents.

In this book, Parrot and Cummings outline the scope and growth of the sex slave market today and explain the history with various elements - including economic, political, cultural, and religious - that make this trade difficult to fully expose, quell, combat, and shut down. We hear from girls and women around the world describing how sexual enslavement has tortured them physically, emotionally, and spiritually, whether they suffer at the hands of prison guards in Turkey, criminals in Washington, or buyers dealing with parents who sell their daughters for the sex slave trade in Greece, Belgium, or France. The authors also describe national and international efforts and legislation passed or in design to stop sex slavery. Successful countries and regions are spotlighted. Then Parrot and Cummings point out actions still needed to stop the sex slavery trade.

About the Author

Andrea Parrot is a Professor of Human Ecology at Cornell University and a board certified Sex Educator. She has received more than $1.5 million in funding for 15 studies focused on sexuality (including sexual violence/assault and sex education) since 1990. Parrot has authored, co-authored, or edited five books. She is a member of the Board of Directors for the Foundation for the Scientific Study of Sexuality and a current member/past officer of the Society for the Scientific Study of Sex. She has been interviewed widely for radio, television, and newspapers, including two appearances on Oprah as well as Larry King Live, Good Morning America, CBS This Morning, The Learning Channel and on NPR with Diane Rehm.

Nina Cummings is a PhD candidate at Cornell and an Adjunct Faculty member at Ithaca College. She is also a University Victim Advocate and a Cornell Advocate for Rape Education, as well as a Certified Health Educator. She coauthored with Parrot the book Forsaken Females: The Brutalization of Women. Cummings and Parrot also coauthored articles that have been published in the Journal of American College Health, Vital Signs, and RESPONSE: Journal of the Center for Women's Policy Studies. In 2001, Cummings won the Cornell University Presidential Advisory Committee on the Status of Women Award.
