A Playbook for Effectively Guiding Groups through Meaningful Dialogue

As a professional social justice facilitator, I believe Unlocking the Magic of Facilitation is a must read for any educator looking to lead better dialogues. This book is one of the first, and certainly the most comprehensive, works on the subject of facilitation and is an invaluable resource for me in my development as a facilitator. The concepts in this book are a playbook for effectively guiding groups through meaningful dialogue and I know that I'll return to it time and again throughout my career. I highly recommend this book to all social justice facilitators, educators, social workers, HR directors, or anyone who engages groups of people in meaning-making conversations.

A straightforward and indispensable guidebook for practice

I currently work in higher education and have spent a lot of time on both sides of the facilitation table (both as a facilitator and participant). What I appreciate about Unlocking the Magic of Facilitation is how intelligently it is broken up in to concepts, and then how well these concepts are explained (pay special attention to the footnotes - they're a treat). I also find it to be valuable to have a lot of the facilitation "best practices" I have learned over the years in a short book that is not only easy to read, but also easy to understand and utilize in my work (thanks to the numerous, well-written examples). While Sam and Meg focus a lot of social justice facilitation, the practices are truly applicable to all types of workshop, seminar, presentation, and discussion facilitation. I've only had the book for a week, and I'm already using it to brainstorm effective discussion questions to use with my RA team for an upcoming team building activity. I believe that anyone could learn something about facilitation from this book, no matter if they have never facilitated a workshop before or if they are facilitating their 1000th. I expect this book to become a permanent part of my library as I continue through my career path as an educator.

As a boy, in the fifties, I spent countless hours – as did so many others of my generation – "copping" named locomotives, particularly on the ECML, without ever really knowing, or even wondering, why the likes of Persimmon or Meg Merrilies or Sir Ronald Matthews were so named.

A named locomotive was not merely one of several with shared characteristics but, through its name, acquired a unique identity outwith the class to which it belonged; some even acquired "celebrity" status.

So, for the tens of thousands of schoolboys in the fifties and beyond whose passion was train spotting, "namers" were everything and the subject of much excited and animated conversation following a visit to a faraway railway 'Mecca' such as Doncaster or Tamworth. Yet, whereas virtually all schoolboys would have known where to see Sir Herbert Walker, Sir Keith Park or Sir Daniel Gooch and the classes of locomotive to which they belonged, few would have known much, if anything, about the history, origins or achievements of the name behind the treasured 'cop' carefully underlined in their compendium of British Locomotives.

It may be difficult for subsequent generations to understand the obsessional nature of the train spotting hobby and its continuing fascination for a substantial and significant number of the boys who were "hooked" on it. Perhaps not surprisingly, with the passing of the steam era interest in the nature of this obsession has increased rather than diminished, with a seemingly insatiable demand for photographic essays and other books on the subject. I hope that those who continue to be ensnared by the hobby will, through this book, share my fascination in discovering and exploring the origins and meanings of some of the names which were the focus of their youthful attention and "gave life" and added interest to the pursuit of collecting engine numbers.

very good overview

This book gives a good overview but just that - an overview. The events and circumstances surrounding the use of the A-bomb simply must be addressed in greater depth for one who wishes to become truly knowledgable on the subject. However, its brevity is also a strength in that for one just getting into the subject it serves as a fabulous introduction and for those already familiar with the subject, it sums things up into a nice recap. Contrary to some reviews of the book, the author doesn't ever say or even imply that the bomb should not have been dropped. Quite the opposite, he provides compelling reasons why the decision to use the bomb was sound and wise militarily, politically, diplomatically, and morally. Granted, the idea of morally justifying such terrible force in any context seems paradoxical and borders on philosophical absurdity, but the author does an admirable job at least providing relatively sound coherent reasons. So while not the final say, this book would be a good addition due to its brevity, credible research, and arguments which, as a whole, are very sound.

The Myth of Decision

This is a jewel of a book on the end of World War II. There have been many myths about Truman's decision to drop the bomb-he even made a brief film explaining how he made the decision, but this clears the air. Truman never actually decided. Everyone involved simply assumed, and correctly so, that once it was completed, it would be used. The author points to many reasons why the atomic bomb should not have been dropped on Japan, most of them valid and discussed previously in historical circles. However, there is a very interesting tidbit about Stalin and some other surprises. It is well worth reading.

This book changed my life

I was raised in the Christian religion, but stopped attending church at age 13. In the last ten years, I've read lots of spirituality books--mainly Buddhist or Buddhist-inspired--by Pema Chodron, Caroline Myss, Thich Nhat Hanh, Natalie Goldberg, and others. I usually shy away from "Christian" books, but Seeding Your Soul is so much more than that, perhaps because the author is trained in Aikido and seems also Buddhist-inspired.

The book begins with a consideration of trust, illustrated by an unforgettable story of the author's casually religious Italian father and the astonishingly bountiful vegetable garden his deep and loving trust produced in a formerly empty lot behind his tailor shop. Similarly, his joyful wonder whether "there is a tree in here (in the pit of a peach he's just eaten)" yields, after he casually tosses the pit into their back yard, a peach tree that in later years bears fruit. There is no simpler, clearer illustration of the power of being open to wonder and trust.

Each chapter has a similarly striking story to illustrate the author's considerations of generosity, love, transformation, forgiveness, and healing. Chapters subtly build on the ones before them. The exercises at each chapter's end are short, doable, and very much too the point. Usually I skip exercises, but I did all of these, maybe because they didn't demand a huge chunk of time, but could easily be folded into my life. Bit by bit, I found myself moving with the author toward healing, the final chapter. I have gone through the book twice, and both times it took me further in growth, in different areas. I plan to read it again and again. The process is gentle, sometimes humorous, and always loving. I have already enjoyed many of the suggestions for further reading (books) and viewing (movies) that end each chapter--these extend the growth I've experienced in thoughtful and even fun ways.

I have bought copies of Seeding Your Soul for all my friends. It's a great "gift" book, gorgeously produced and a delight to hold and thumb through. The photographs and their captions draw you into the experience, opening you to each step. This book has brought me back to a deep respect for Christianity's teachings, something that had been drummed out of me by a strict, conservative and fundamentalist religious upbringing.

I can't wait for Dianne Costanzo's next book. She is a gifted writer and a spiritual teacher to watch.
