About the Author

Benjamin Bengfort is a Data Scientist who lives inside the beltway but ignores politics (the normal business of DC) favoring technology instead. He is currently working to finish his PhD at the University of Maryland where he studies machine learning and distributed computing. His lab does have robots (though this field of study is not one he favors) and, much to his chagrin, they seem to constantly arm said robots with knives and tools; presumably to pursue culinary accolades. Having seen a robot attempt to slice a tomato, Benjamin prefers his own adventures in the kitchen where he specializes in fusion French and Guyanese cuisine as well as BBQ of all types. A professional programmer by trade, a Data Scientist by vocation, Benjamin's writing pursues a diverse range of subjects from Natural Language Processing, to Data Science with Python to analytics with Hadoop and Spark.

Jenny Kim is an experienced big data engineer who works in both commercial software efforts as well as in academia. She has significant experience in working with large scale data, machine learning, and Hadoop implementations in production and research environments. Jenny (with Benjamin Bengfort) previously built a large scale recommender system that used a web crawler to gather ontological information about apparel products and produce recommendations from transactions. Currently, she is working with the Hue team at Cloudera, to help build intuitive interfaces for analyzing big data with Hadoop.

Scalable analytics using the Hadoop ecosystem!

I really like this book. It is a great overview of a plethora of topics around doing scalable data analytics and data science. It is extremely up-to date, going through techniques that have existed for many years now like MapReduce, but also newer systems like Spark, all in the context of the Hadoop eco-system. They go into machine learning techniques, data management, and overall paint a nice picture around what data science is, and why data products are important, while teaching you how to make them!

Every single concept is explained in a clear and concise manner, and wherever details are omitted there is always a citation to a source where the reader can continue reading more about it, which I think is great. Although I wouldn’t classify myself as a beginner, I believe it is friendly to both professionals and beginners, as it is centered around python which makes most examples (that are conveniently uploaded in a nice github repository) really easy to simply run and play around with. After describing something, whether that would be a technique for data analysis, or just the in-and outer workings of some analysis platform like HBase, Hive etc, the authors provide examples so that while you’re reading about this stuff you can also run it, play around with it and really explore how these systems function; I believe this is a crucial part of familiarizing ones’ self with new platforms.

Another thing I enjoyed a lot was the ending of this book. After you really dive into all of these systems and get your feet wet with each one of them, the authors wrap it all up in a nice bow by taking a step back and describing the entire end-to-end process of how you would go about productively using the knowledge you’ve gotten from this book to build data analytics workflows!
I highly recommend this to anyone who both knows that they want to learn how to deploy scalable analytics workflows in 2016, but also to readers who are simply just curious about data science; this book will suck you in!

About the Author
Eric W. Noreen is a globe-trotting academic who has held appointments at institutions in the United States, Europe, and Asia. He is currently Professor of Accounting at the University of Washington and Visiting Price Waterhouse Professor of Management Information & Control at INSEAD, an international graduate school of business located in France. He received his B.A. degree from the University of Washington and MBA and Ph.D. degrees from Stanford University. A Certified Management Accountant, he was awarded a Certificate of Distinguished Performance by the Institute of Certified Management Accountants. 

Peter C. Brewer is a professor in the Department of Accountancy at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. He holds a BS degree in accounting from Penn State University, an MS degree in accounting from the University of Virginia, and a PhD from the University of Tennessee. He has published 30 articles in a variety of journals including: Management Accounting Research, the Journal of Information Systems, Cost Management, Strategic Finance, the Journal of Accountancy, Issues in Accounting Education, and the Journal of Business Logistics. Professor Brewer is a member of the editorial boards of Issues in Accounting Education and the Journal of Accounting Education. His article “Putting Strategy into the Balanced Scorecard” won the 2003 International Federation of Accountants’ Articles of Merit competition and his articles “Using Six Sigma to Improve the Finance Function” and “Lean Accounting: What’s It All About?” were awarded the Institute of Management Accountants’ Lybrand Gold and Silver Medals in 2005 and 2006. He has received Miami University’s Richard T. Farmer School of Business Teaching Excellence Award and has been recognized on two occasions by the Miami University Associated Student Government for “making a remarkable commitment to students and their educational development.” He is a leading thinker in undergraduate management accounting curriculum innovation and is a frequent presenter at various professional and academic conferences.Prior to joining the faculty at Miami University, Professor Brewer was employed as an auditor for Touche Ross in the firm’s Philadelphia office. He also worked as an internal audit manager for the Board of Pensions of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). He frequently collaborates with companies such as Harris Corporation, Ghent Manufacturing, Cintas, Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Schneider Electric, Lenscrafters, and Fidelity Investments in a consulting or case writing capacity.

Ray H. Garrison is emeritus Professor of Accounting at Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Brigham Young University and his D.B.A. degree from Indiana University. As a certified public accountant, Professor Garrison has been involved in management consulting work with both national and regional accounting firms. He has published articles in The Accounting Review, Management Accounting, and other professional journals. Innovation in the classroom has earned Professor Garrison the Karl G. Maeser Distinguished Teaching Award from Brigham Young University.

Correct book just no connect code

The book was great but it does not come with the code for connect so had to purchase this separate which was another 70.00. So is better to just buy the book or pay the higher price from the beginning.

He’s written several novels for the Black Library, including the Night Lords series, the Space Marine Battles book Helsreach and the New York Times bestselling The First Heretic for the Horus Heresy. He lives and works in Northern Ireland with his wife Katie, hiding from the world in the middle of nowhere. Another triumph?

This is yet another of Aaron Demski-Bowden's superb books. I received the Emperor's Gift on Monday evening and had finished it by the end of the next day before starting another of ADB's books. This time, the focus is on the Grey Knights, the most secretive of all Space Marine Chapters to the extent that all humans that learn about their existence must be purged. As Warhammer 40k or readers of Ben Counter's Grey Knights Omnibus will know already, the Grey Knights Chapter - the Emperor's Gift - are Psyker Space Marines specialized in fighting the Daemons of Chaos across the Empire. They mostly operate in small units at the call of Imperial Inquisitors. This book is centered on one Hyperion, a young Grey Knight who joins Castan Squad and the events take place before, during and after the first war for Armageddon. There are numerous reasons for loving this story, which is told in the first person by Hyperion himself.

One is that it presents the Grey Knights in a different light than what Ben Counter has done a while ago. Gone are the super-heroïc Grey Knights who make "ordinary" Space Marines seem like children. Instead, you tend to get another Chapter of Space Marines, but a secretive one with specialized skills, and these Space Marines have their weaknesses, just like any of the others. As ADB tends to favor, his Space Marines are first and foremost human, and then super-warriors. They are not invincible, far from it, and are no stronger than other Space Marines, especially not the fierce Space Wolves of Fenris.

Another is that the book brings in the Wolves and opposes them to the Inquisition and the Grey Knights. This is particularly interesting because it allows it to get ADB's take on the Wolves, which, while not original, emphasizes their fierce independence and their sense of honor, as opposed to what they see as the traitorous Inquisitors. A related point is that opposing the Wolwes to the Grey Knights allows to contrast the two organizations, although both are traditionnally viewed, in different ways, as the Emperor's executionners. This is where ABD seems to have introduced a bit of a novelty when compared to other novels where the Wolves appear: they care for "ordinary" humans in a way that the Wolves of Leman Russ do not in previous novels.

Anyway, introducing the Wolves and giving them such an important role is likely to draw in many readers for whom the Wolves have a special attraction: they have always been among the most favoured Space Marines Legions for many readers. A related point and another original streak is to oppose two sets of heroes - the Grey Knights and the Wolves - and the "goodies" are somewhat difficult to determine when the two get to fight each other, just lik,e in any civil war.

In a similar vein, ABD paints Hyperion, and the Grey Knights more generally, with all their qualities, but also all their flaws, insisting on their contradictions, emotions and limitations as has become his trademark. In a way, this book can be seen as the "initiation" of the young and largely untested Hyperion through trials, errors and sacrifices in what can only be a long, painful and bitter process.

Apart from that, his battle scenes as a good as usual, with this feeling that every fight is a desperate struggle and every "victory", if they can be called that, is a costly achievement and comes with grievous losses. There are no shining triumphs in this book.

Finally, the most striking feature of this book is, once again, ADB's originality and the way he stands apart from what we have come to expect from most other Black Library authors. This is not to say that he is necessarily "better" than the others but rather that he has a different take which comes out as a breath of fresh air as moves away from the paths that others have already trod. In a way, this book, like others, make him into some kind of "First Heretic" among Warhammer 40K authors. This originality makes the book worth reading in itself, regardless of whether you agree with ABD's take or not.

I loved it and I hope many other readers will love it as least as much.

Intense Action with Grey Knights, Space Wolves and Angron

I've read all of the books based on the Grey Knights, and The Emperor's Gift is my favorite by far. There's plenty of daemon-killing action as you would expect, but best of all are the parts that deal with the First War for Armaggedon - not the first Ork invasion of this world but the daemonic invasion of the world that the Inquisition has worked hard to keep secret. In the 40K universe, there've been many whispered references to the First War but very few stories written about it. I was disappointed that more of the story wasn't devoted to Armaggedon but then again, the Ordo Malleus was only involved with the last stages of the First War. Also, you get to see the Grey Knights come into conflict with the Space Wolves, and Logan Grimnar in action. Highly recommended if you're a Grey Knights fan.

A must read

I bought this book, two copies, for myself and a friend who is an Inquisition fan, and obviously Grey Knights.
Both of us loved the book for two different aspects. Me as a fluff fan and in depths reader of background material, loved the book because it is about a pivotal story arch for the Grey Knights and the Grey Knight history. As well as other aspects that I do not wish to reveal, due to it spoiling the storyline.
My friend who is a Grey Knights player loved the actions that were taken and commands the Grey Knights were forced to do.

Aaron Dembski-Bowden did a perfect illustration as to what it takes to be a Grey Knight and what dangers they are uniquely designed and trained for. This and Deathwatch by Steve Parker are two must reads of 2013 for any Inquisition fans.
