A counter to Dr. Bouchard's poor review.

This work was not intended to bring to the forefront a great debate over the Armenian Question, Dr. Bouchard! The purpose of this work is to cover an extensive period of Ottoman history in a small amount of pages, and I think it is presented well. Merely rejecting the words of Dr. Shaw based upon such a narrow, controversial topic as the Armenian Question is not being true to the people who want solid reviews.

True the work is very detailed in its factual presentation, but it educates the reader on the many facets of Ottoman civilization. Too many authors of Ottoman history fail to get to the true meat of the matter, and Dr. Shaw does not dissapoint. I would recommend this to any student of Ottoman history as an overall guide to the events during the period it covers.

These great historians had access to many Turkish sources and their work shows it. It brings out aspects of Ottoman history that Western sources neglected.

Superb Scholarly Research

I always admired Prof Shaw's careful research regading the Turkish history. It is also interesting to note that in the section titled 'On Armenian Collaboration With Invading Russian Armies in 1914,' he does expose the well-known Armenian crime of genocide against the defenseless Muslims in 1914.
"In April 1915 Dashnaks from Russian Armenia organized a revolt in the city of Van, whose 33,789 Armenians comprised 42.3 percent of the population. Leaving Erivan on April 28, 1915, Armenian Army reached Van on May 14 and organized and carried out a general slaughter of the local Muslim population during the next two days."

A fantastic work of historical fiction

When more than one friend raves about a book, you are inclined to give it a try even if it's not in your typical genre. While I am not normally a historical fiction fan (though I did love the Red Tent which this book reminded me of both in terms of bringing a period of history back into light as well as the powerful character development), I am very glad I gave Cleopatra's Shadows a chance.

This is a story of Cleopatra's two sisters: Arsinoe ("younger") and Berenice ("elder'). The story begins when Berenice overthrows her father's kingdom and then spins the tale of the aftermath of this coup. Holleman brings to life not just the lead characters - the two sisters - but the various Eunuchs and advisors and even friends who cross these sisters' paths.

Often when a book is told from more than one point of view, you find yourself liking one voice better, or at least eagerly awaiting the sections told from that voice's point of view. The magic of this novel is that I actually found myself a little sad when each section ended, whether it was the elder or younger's voice. At first I favored one sister, then the other....and ultimately Holleman does an excellent job of making both characters not just likable but human and flawed enough to care about their futures. Through careful word choice, much research and an eye for detail, Holleman manages to have each side of the story bring forth its own twists, its own unraveling, its own shadows.

A more subtle brilliance of this book is that it made me want to learn more about a time period about whichI knew (and frankly cared) very little. For a non-historical fiction kind of gal, that is saying a lot.

Finally, I must disagree with the reviewer who claims that the title of this book is misleading as it suggests the book is about Cleopatra herself (which it is not). Personally, I found the title to be a spot-on summary of what is to come in the book itself: Mystery, a little-known supporting cast and ultimately the shadowy story behind the more well-known sister's rise.

Historical Fiction Fans Will Love This

Author Emily Holleman has done a decent job of imagining what life might have been like for two of Cleopatra's sisters while their father, King Ptolemy XII, is away trying to get Roman support of his rule while dueling wife and concubine compete. We see Alexandria through the eyes of Berenice, daughter of his wife, and the eyes of much younger Arsinoe, daughter of his concubine. Holleman follows Strabo's accounts in terms of family relations and rules for the most part.

The book is laid out in chapters that go back and forth between Arsinoe and Berenice during a three year period when Berenice is ruling in her own right, approximately 58-55 BCE. Each character has her own voice and view which Holleman does an excellent job of embodying. We feel sympathy for both the little girl forced to learn the arts of flattery and politicking to survive as well as for the young woman wearing the crowns of Egypt and trying to apply what she has been taught and learned from a father who has abandoned her.

Holleman adds in enough details to make the world of Ptolemaic Alexandria come alive without resorting to long descriptions or purple prose. We can picture this world in our minds as we read and the result is a lovely book that is also fast paced and easy to grasp for lovers of historical fiction.

Berenice is the better known of the two sisters

I found this debut novel to be both entertaining and informative. Apparently the author, Emily Holleman, has been fascinated for years by the sisters of Cleopatra...Berenice and Arsinoe. Berenice is the better known of the two sisters, while Arsinoe receives hardly a mention in the historical record. "Cleopatra's Shadows" is told in alternating chapters by the sisters, who are actually half-sisters with different mothers.

I know very little about the history of Egypt during this time period, other than what is in popular culture involving Cleopatra and her affairs with Julius Caesar and Mark Anthony, so much of what is covered in this book is new to me. I think the author did an admirable job in giving the reader the rather convoluted history of the Ptolemy dynasty without overwhelming the reader with details that could sink a novel. Both sisters were presented as developed figures who became more human as their respective stories progressed throughout the novel. I recommend this book for those who want to read a novelistic treatment of two relatively obscure women who lived in the shadow of a legend. Those who are more acquainted with the time period and history may be more critical of the historic aspects, but as pure entertainment I think the book works fairly well.

MOS Physics and Technology book review

This book focuses on the metal insulator semiconductor (MIS) device physics. As such it goes in to detail at a greater depth than Sze or general SC device physics. It is well written and easy to understand. Good use of appendices for derivations that would bog down the text. The only complaint is that the type (this is a paperback) on some of the symbols is too small to easily read. I have seen the hardback and did not notice that problem with it.

Avoid Kindle Edition

This is the first LP Kindle edition I've bought, and I won't be doing so again. It is extremely hard to navigate - the table of contents is not intuitive enough or detailed enough. As an example, there is no table of contents where you can see the list of the regions (much less the cities within them) and navigate directly to them. It's also full of formatting problems - blank pages, photos that take up 1/3 of the available space on the page... the worst are the maps. The map of the country is about 1/2 the size of an iPad screen and at a resolution where you cannot zoom in effectively. Other maps throughout the book are presented so small it's impossible to see them or zoomed in but cut into four squares spread out over four pages. Makes no sense. Finally, the formatting - font, heading, section set up - is extremely basic, making it hard to skim and find what you are looking for. Unfortunately, skimming through the pages is the only way because the table of contents navigation is so weak. There aren't even headers at the top of the page to tell you which section you are in! You have to page back until you find a section header. I'm really disappointed.

Buy the PDF version of the book from Lonely Planet and read it on your Kindle or IPad. It won't be perfect, but it will be MUCH easier.

My friend and I decided to roadtrip through Morocco, from Casablanca to Marrakech, to Fes, and to Tangier. We only had a week and wanted to make sure we had the best use of our time, and this book appeared to have the most information about the country. My friend also purchased a book of her own, but we ended up using mine instead, because there was a lot more information. It had some great tips about customs and how to navigate difficult areas (such as the medina and markets). The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because the maps were a bit confusing. I also felt some of it was a bit outdated (one example: the horse/buggy rides are a fairly newer addition to Marrakech, and there was no information in the book at all about these, how to negotiate, what you can expect to pay, are there scams, etc).

Overall, though, I thought it was a great companion guide for the trip we took.

This probably is still one of the best travel guides for Morocco. The maps are excellent, lodging info useful but where it remains unsurpassed is trekking information. Info on how to structure 1-7 day treks, where to eat and sleep and how to find your way across the difficult terrain is excellent, imo better than what I've seen in other LP guides. Less effort seems to have been expended on interesting info on cities & their history; sometimes, as in the case of Marrakesh, the prose borders on corny. I bought the Kindle edition as well and can;t understand why the authors did not add little videos of locales or clips of music.

More could be said about the Morrocan people and about music of which there are many many distinct (incredibly rich and powerful) forms that include Gnawa, the exorcism ritual music of former black slaves (it's the Moroccan "blues").

Moroccans are a diverse, proud and beautiful people. A little kindness and generosity go a long way - too often have i seen tense fat lilly-white Westerners walk around nervously clutching bags strapped on their chests, evading payment of a few MADs for a street performance and then get fleeced while buying a carpet or a lamp, or get screwed by taxi drivers who are in fact scoundrels that are almost impossible to evade. Faced with professional beggars, tourists tend to clam up and willfully ignore real cases of hardship that one sees on city streets or in some Berber villages. No, one should be a human amongst human beings, revel in sights, smells, vibrations and emotions that are Morocco. And when it comes to large purchases, go for the jugular and haggle without mercy. Haggling is an emotional-financial-cleverness extravaganza that Moroccans seem to live for. Don't disappoint them. They'll still get your hide and that's OK too.

well written, but what about breastfeeding?

As a Lactation Consultant, I looked forward to reading this book to learn about ways to manage feeding difficulties. This book is very easy to read and contains excellent illustrations and explanations of a vast array of oral motor functioning issues. However, I was disappointed to see that bottlefeeding was virtually the only feeding method discussed. There were rare to none examples of ways to manage breastfeeding difficulties or enhance an infants functioning at the breast. Also, when bottlefeeding was discussed, it was virtually always assumed that formula was being fed and expressed breastmilk was rarely mentioned as an option. I work with some moms whose infants have feeding difficulties due to congenital conditions/prematurity. Many of these women pump breastmilk to provide for their infants and are dedicated to attempt to get their babies directly breastfeeding. What these women and their babies deserve is for specialists like Wolf, etc. to devote their expertise to develop tools and therapies that support compromised infants in breastfeeding directly instead of assuming bottlefeeding as the "norm" for these special babies.

Excellent resource for pediatric therapist

When I read the other review, I felt it necessary to write my review. Although this book does not highlight using breast milk in place of formula, there is an entire chapter on breastfeeding. Additionally, this book is an excellent resource for therapist working in the NICU. It offers a wealth of knowledge on feeding techniques, supplies, and the physiology of nippling/SSB, just to name a few. So this book deserves five stars in my opinion as it is thorough and truly is one of the better books I have read on infant feeding.

It was in these two rooms that the greatest transformation in home engineering occurred. A process for bringing clean water in and removing waste water transformed the home into a quasi-organic being, eating and excreting through an alimentary system whose inherent cleanliness influenced the design of the rooms where it was housed. Ellen Lupton and J. Abbot Miller present the history of this change in words and historical images in this attractive and surprisingly informative volume.

A Cultural History of the Kitchen and Bath

This is one of my favorite books, out of hundreds on historic houses, architecture, interior design, etc. It is a survey of the way the kitchen and bath evolved in America over the last 100 years or so, in text and pictures. The pictures are great : lots of old ads are reprinted, and some of the photos are hilarious, given our current sensibilities. As much as the rooms have changed, we have changed too, and the real thrust here is that kitchens and bathrooms and the accouterments found therein are reflections of our shared cultural beliefs, hopes, fears and dreams. They are not just places to cook and clean up, they are mirrors of all that we are, changing just as we are. This is a thin book but loaded with information and pictures, and subtle commentary if you read closely. Highly recommended.

Not what I was expecting

This is a good book but not what I was expecting. This is for an established company wanting to work on their image etc.
Not so much for a very young start up with little or no advertising budget. Maybe I'll read it again in a year or two and it will be of more benefit then. Cheers

Wow, if I could give this 10 stars I would, really. This book REALLY REALLY REALLY inspired me. I'm so glad that Steve and Allison took the time to write this. Me and my wife are currently working on launching our very own pressure cleaning business. This book confirmed so much to me, spoke VOLUMES to me, encouraged me, etc. I like the way that Steve calls people in this business up to a new level of integrity and service and it inspired me that I don't just have to have a little side business with this, I can actually build a successful company through pressure washing. I read a few other e-books, but none as thorough and inspiring as this one. They've obviously done their research and are giving a veteran's perspective on this business. I'm not able to implement everything here at this point in my business, BUT I now have a bigger vision, clearer goals to shoot for, and a ton of inspiration and motivation to keep moving forward and go as big as I'd like with my business. Thanks Steve! Thanks Allison! For setting the bar higher! Now when's part II coming out!?

This tale of a repressive priest and his small Mexican village during the eighteen months preceding the Revolution of 1910 is a great novel, one that exposes the struggle between human desire and paralyzing fear—fear of humanity, fear of nature, fear of the wrath of God. Agustín Yáñez probes the actions of people caught in life’s currents, enthralling his readers with mounting dramatic tension as he shows that no power can forge saints from the human masses, that any attempt to do so, in fact, often has exactly the opposite result.

Yáñez brings to his work a deep understanding of people—his people—and he illuminates a great truth—that no one, anywhere, seems very strange when we understand the environment that has produced him or her.

About the Author
Agustín Yáñez (1904–1980), recognized as one of Mexico’s greatest novelists, was long a leading figure in the cultural and political life of his country. He wrote seventeen books and held numerous political offices, including Governor of Jalisco and Secretary of Public Education.

Excellent novel, set against the beginning of the Mexican revolution

Classic award-winning novel by world famous Mexican writer Agustin Yanez. Replete with historical facts, through his characters Yanez offers great insight into their psyches and behavior against a slow-to-change Mexico in the beginning of the revolution. The novel could be used in a Mexican history, sociology or psychology class. But most of all, once you begin to acquaint yourself with the characters, you cannot let them go. Excellent book, at an excellent prize!
