Satisfied by Jeff Manion

In Satisfied, Jeff Manion address an issue prevalent in Western Society and one that plagues Christians, especially in North America, who either through growing salaries or growing credit card debt have made the accumulation of stuff the focus of their lives. Manion talks about the reality of the old saying, “I owe, I owe, it’s off to work I go,” and it’s destructive results.

He starts with this quote, "We live in a consumer-driven, debt-ridden, advertisement saturated culture, and it will require nothing short of total transformation to adopt the heart and brain of Jesus." Manion spends the first part of the book talking about the concept of contentment and how we must learn to admire without having to acquire. To Manion, contentment is "the discipline of being fully alive to God and to others." Yes, it is easy to get caught up in the desire for more, but "if our goal is more, then whatever we have is not enough. He says, “It is like running a race where a finish line doesn't exist." It is easy to fall into this trap, where I fail to enjoy what I have because I obsess over what I lack and others have.

This is a book on giving and finances, yet Manion doesn't focus on money-saving tips, choosing instead on helping us change our focus from ourselves and our money and things to enjoying God and serving others.

I enjoyed the book, and its easy to read style.

Wise words on contentment, gratitude, and giving

Does it sometimes seem that enough is never enough? Jeff Manion, pastor of Ada Bible Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan, challenges Christians to pause a moment and reflect on their spending habits and lifestyle in Satisfied: Discovering Contentment in a World of Consumption. Manion has served for decades at Ada Bible. I never did attend when I lived in Grand Rapids but was familiar with the dynamic, growing ministry of the church. Manion's clear teaching, biblical grounding, and story-telling ability to bring to life the setting of the New Testament are evident in Satisfied and surely reflect on a successful career in the pulpit.

In Satisfied, Manion's target audience is Western Christians who, either through growing salaries or growing credit card debt (or, likely, both) have made the accumulation of stuff the focus of their lives. How easy it is in our culture to believe that what we have equals who we are. He writes, "We live in a consumer-driven, debt-ridden, advertisement saturated culture, and it will require nothing short of total transformation to adopt the heart and brain of Jesus."

One key is contentment, "the discipline of being fully alive to God and to others whatever our material circumstances." We get caught up in the desire for more, but "if our goal is more, then whatever we have is not enough. It is like running a race where a finish line doesn't exist." We might lose our contentment due to comparison with others. I know I often fall into this trap, where I fail to enjoy what I have because I obsess over what I lack and others have. "Comparison is the enemy of the satisfied life." We should foster an attitude of thankfulness for what we have and proper perspective on the blessings in our lives.

Manion is not, however, an ascetic. He acknowledges that God does want to bless us, and wants us to enjoy his blessings. "The gracious Father provides innumerable gifts and wants you to enjoy them." God gives us "a whispered invitation: 'Enjoy this.'" But he does not stop there. When he whispers that he wants us to enjoy his blessings, our response should be, "Is there anything you desire from me?" We may hear him say, "Yes, I want you to share."

Unlike many books on giving and finances, Manion doesn't focus on money-saving tips or suggestions for communal living. His project is more fundamental, to spur a change in focus from ourselves and our money and things to enjoying God and serving others. I enjoyed the book, enjoyed Manion's style, and was challenged by his substance. I am guilty of wanting more, of focusing on money and things, and of letting myself become immersed in our consumer culture. Manion provides a remedy, or at least points us in the right direction.

Book Review: Satisfied

Satisfied, while certainly convicting, did not put me on the guilt trip I'd expected. It did, however, encourage me to examine my purchasing habits and remember that true contentment does not lie in anything I can buy. Manion is upfront and honest about his own struggles to find satisfaction, and I always seem to gain more from books like this where I can identify with the author.

Although a short read, the book is packed with wisdom and some anecdotes to help drive home Manion's points. It's divided into six parts: The School of Contentment, Comparison, Identity Shift, The Challenge of Affluence, The Generous Heart and The Invitation. I found myself particularly touched by the section on Comparison, as I know that I struggle with comparing myself to others and looking at what I don't have rather than appreciating what I do have.

Each section ends with some discussion questions and suggested projects for practical application, making this book an easy one to incorporate into a small group study or class.

All in all, I found Satisfied to be a quick and enjoyable read that is challenging me to seek a counter-cultural life by focusing not so much on pursuing possessions but on seeking after God.

This is a very good book, full of ideas and insights, and -- last but not least -- solid, thoughtful criticism of the various thinkers treated (after a short opening chapter on Plato, it's basically Hegel, Schopenhauer and Nietzsche through to Sartre, Heidegger, Foucault and Derrida). Young is a superbly clear writer, reluctant to obfuscate or to oversimplify. As I have said, he criticizes and in doing so doesn't pull his punches, though he's never unfair. He explains each thinker's philosophical approach, and then discusses it in terms of the overarching theme of the book: what counts as human flourishing for the thinker in question, and to what extent is the thinker's account a compelling one. He engages with arguments, puts the philosophers into context, and into debate with each other. Finally, I found that he was enjoyably critical of Foucault for the philosopher's derivative Nietzschean hedonism (the idea that the best answer to the question of how to live, and how to promote human flourishing, is to live one's life as though it were a work of art). This is a book many readers would like and get a lot out of even if they aren't philosophers. I have a high regard for his other books (on Heidegger and Nietzsche) but this one, for all of the care he takes in presenting arguments, allows his personality to show through a little bit. And he sounds like an interesting, likeable chap.

Excellent

The clarity of Young's Schopenhauer motivated me to read this book, which I otherwise would have put aside as soon as I saw chapters about Hegel, Heidegger, Foucault, and Derrida. My confidence in Young was well-placed: he makes every single philosopher in the book accessible, no matter how obscure their writings are. This, I think, is the great advantage of the book, far beyond the light it casts on the search for meaning in light of the death of God: it is an outstanding introduction to Continental philosophy generally, digestible to those of an analytic temperament.

What Philosophy Is Supposed to Be Like

I, like Mark (another reviewer), was attracted to Young based on his book on Schopenhauer. Julian Young is, in my humblest of opinions, one of the clearest, most insightful, and simply most useful philosophers living on this tainted orb.

Young manages to transform the hopelessly obscure (Heidigger, Derrida, Foucoult, Sartre) into pressingly relevant thinkers for the secular age in which we live. It may be possible that those thinkers may not agree entirely with the use that Young makes of them, but they may have. In any case, what is important in philosophy are the ideas, and Young sees amazing ideas in dark places.

In any case, Young traces a story through these difficult thinkers, and that story is a compelling one. He digs for the insights and finds them amidst all the jumble and confusion that so often characterizes many of these philosophers. Young has completely changed my perspective on these guys.

Young is also a lot of fun. He is not politically correct, and calls out BS when he sees it. I love this guy's attitude, even when I (rarely) disagree with him.

Dr. Young, if you read this review, keep writing until you finally meet the fate that has been fixed for all.

This is what they meant by erotic romance.

Carrie's Answer has all the elements of the traditional romance genre (tender, sweet, compelling characters struggling through some sort of hurdle to be together) but it has the BDSM and brief ménage (m/f/m) twist to add the erotic spice readers are looking for. Not the raw, edgy somewhat dark BDSM story I am used to, this one is loving and endearing.

Carrie Worthington has held a torch for her boss, Marcus Worthington, since going to work for him. For the past ten years, she stood by him through the highs and lows, especially the low point of his divorce when his ex-wife publicized his lifestyle as a Dom. Still, Marcus never sees her as anything other than his secretary. That is, until he spots her at the local BDSM-themed club. Unable to deal with his newfound lust he terminates her employment.

But Carrie fights back. She has a contract and if he wants out, he has to give her one weekend to be trained by him to be a submissive. And that's when the sparks turn into a roaring blaze.

Marcus has been hurt before, and I could relate to his desire to protect his heart and keep a barrier up. He's been the clueless fool one too many times and he keeps expecting Carrie to be the same. Poor Carrie has waited long enough and I love how she took the reins to claim her man. She wasn't going to let him chase her away. Whatever he wanted, she was there, submitting to all his needs and desires.

I think my favorite part was when he gave her a simple velvet collar to wear for the weekend and she just about melted. Me, too.

This story is the first in the series The Worthington Group. We did meet some other characters, but for the most part Carrie and Marcus dominated the action. The pacing was quick. The sex was written incredibly well. And the characters had undeniable chemistry. I've already bought books two and three, so clearly I'm sold on the series.

I enjoyed having a sweeter side to a BDSM story. I love my raw, dark, edgy characters, but this was a fun excursion. It's pretty much loving, sensual BDSM that would be easy tolerated by those unfamiliar with the genre. Enjoy!

Great story - nice BDSM elements + the underdog gets the guy = winner!

Carrie has lusted after Marcus for many years. He's completely gun shy since he was taken through the ringer by the ex wife who called him out on his kink in public. As a Worthington that meant every thing was magnified x 10.

Fast forward 5 years - Carrie is still very much in love with Marcus but he sees her only as an employee - or that's how he acts. When he finds her ready to explore at his BDSM club he overtsteps his limits. And regrets it. So much so that he sends her packing. She has a deal for him though - spend one weekend training her to be his submissive. He agrees and wonders why.

This is a very nice kinky romance. It has a wonderful Happily Ever After and the BDSM elements are integrated so well into the story that it is seamless. The flow of the story is superb - dialogue is true to life and there is a nice balance between getting inside the characters heads and having them express things verbally to one another. Althought his is not a long story it felt much more deep than I am used to in short BDSM novella's.

This is one of a series - so if you enjoy this one pick up the rest!

I really liked this story alot.....Carrie was a mixture of innocence and aventure. She loves Marcus and is willing and wanting to delve into his lifestyle of BDSM to see where it will lead them. Marcus doesn't know it yet, but he loves Carrie too and wants to see if she can be with him for who he is, a DOM. The story moves along and takes us through a great journey that made for some really HOT HOT steamy scenes. I thought it was engaging and emotional and am glad to have come upon it via an Amazon recommendation.. Looking forward to Book 2, Meredith's story...

For many years, spiritual seekers have turned East in search of the wisdom of Buddhism, Hinduism and other Eastern religious traditions. Smolley and Kinney, editors of Gnosis magazine, contend that the wisdom so eagerly sought from these Eastern traditions has been readily available in Western esoteric traditions. In their introduction, the authors note that "esoteric traditions are concerned with transcendence.... [E]sotericists say it may be possible not only to reach God in the next life, but to experience him in this one." These traditions emphasize self-awakening to inner wisdom. According to the authors, esoteric spirituality teaches that such an awakening brings great clarity and insight into the meanings of dreams, myths and symbols. The opening chapter explores how Jung's idea of the collective unconscious and his discussions of alchemy spurred new interest in Western esotericism. In subsequent chapters, Smolley and Kinney offer engaging and lively histories of esoteric movements, ranging from Kabbalism, magic, Wicca and neopaganism to shamanism, alchemy, hermeticism and Sufism. Each chapter provides a historical overview, an introduction to the major beliefs and practices of the movement and comments on the reasons spiritual seekers might find that particular esoteric tradition attractive, closing with an annotated bibliography. Smolley and Kinney's handbook provides a useful introduction to the many varieties of Western esotericism.

During the 1960s, many Americans began seeking answers to their most pressing spiritual needs in various Asian religions, and this eastward focus has continued. Smoley and Kinney, editors of Gnosis magazine (a journal of mystical spirituality), argue persuasively that many of the faiths identified with the West offer mystical insights as rich as anything found in the East. The subtitle of this book is its best description. The topics covered include Jung's theories of the unconscious, Gurdjieffianism, gnosticism, the Jewish Kaballah, witchcraft and neopaganism, nativistic Shamanism, and the beliefs of Masons and Templars. This book does a particularly good job on "fringe" occult areas such as esoteric Christianity, astral light magic, and New Age theology. The authors take special care not to advocate one belief system over another and offer a highly readable account of Western spirituality and mysticism. A Balanced View of the Western Esoteric Tradition

Richard Smoley, former editor of the (lamentably) defunct magazine "Gnosis," has written an excellent introduction to the Western Mystery Tradition in all of its major forms: Hermeticism, Wicca, esoteric Christianity, Sufism, and "the Fourth Way," among others. As always, Smoley is balanced, objective, fair, and - above all - sane. There is nothing of the fanatic or obscurantist about Smoley, and he blends a wide knowledge of the field with bits of humor and insights gained from personal experience.

Smoley is an excellent writer - intelligent and engaging, without being pedantic or superficial. I have only one caveat about this book: those already familiar with these topics - including former readers of "Gnosis" - might find that the book covers familiar territory and offers little that is new. Still, even these readers might find it useful as a reference. But for those new to these topics, you couldn't do better than start with this book; Smoley is a trusted guide in a field too often inhabited by quacks, cultists, and uncritical enthusiasts.

Intelligent, entertaining, extremely learned yet readable...

In the flood of psycho-spiritual babble books, this one is a quiet winner. Like the magazine Gnosis which the authors edited and published for many years, this book is intelligent and well-balanced and shines a much-needed light on musty areas of Western spirituality. I found it very useful, especially the annotated bibiography for each subject - sufism, Gurdjieff, alchemy, shamanism, etc. And where else would you find out the real reason why Hitler didn't invade England...? Highly recommended!

THE guide to who's who & what's what in western esoterica

The authors have accomplished a rare feat by being simultaneously sympathetic yet impartial in describing such a broad range of spiritual teachings. They provide succinct but nuanced descriptions of these teachings, along with each's history and relationships to other teachings. Also included is much sage advice for those who may wish to pursue these paths, and annotated references for additional reading. This has clearly been a labor of love on Smoley & Kinney's part. It is well worth reading for anyone with the slightest bit of interest in spiritual matters, whatever their religious preference.

EXCITING BOOK

This book is about a mouse named Ralph who lives uinder a grandfather clock in a hotel with his families. Ralph is not just an ordinary mouse you see speaking in your attic, he is special. So special, that he has his own red motorcycle. With the motorcycle, he runs away from the hotel and his families because of his families' low trustworthy againist him. He runs away into a campsite with hundreds of boys and girls. Ralph finds himself in trouble with three cats when one of the boys named Gark catches him and keeps him from troubles.
There is no part of this book I disliked. None, because Beverly Cleary keeps yohh into the book. It actually "feels" like your there with Ralph and his ultimult adventures. She keeps you from stop rerading and say, "this book ...!" You rather say, "Gee, I wonder what happens on the next chapter!" I highly recommad you read this book instantly.
"I hab a better idea," said Garf. "I'll take you back to the hotel myself when my family comes to get me. They'll be spending the night there before they come and pick me up the day after tomorrow. The camo doesn't serve us lunch on the day we leave, so I know we'll stop at the Inn for lunchbefore we get home.It's the only place around here. I could easily take you along in my pocket." This quote meant a lot to me. This quote showed me that all Beverly Cleary books had a moral to the story. This book's moral was "the better friendship you have, the better things that you will earn from friendship."
Why this book you ask? Well, because Beverly Cleary is my favorite author. She gives me the reason to read rather then just reading for fun. I really get to learn lots of things when I read her books. Like a history book with games on it so that you learn stuff and hab fun. Read this fabulous book and Runaway Ralph, might be your favorite too.
