Highlights the problems; provides few answers

Chris Goodall's volume in the "All That Matters" series, "Sustainability", may be a slim little number but it certainly packs quite a lot in between its covers. The book provides a broad overview of what constitutes global sustainability, why it is important, and what challenges the human race faces in trying to achieve it. After introducing the main concepts and players in the debate -- natural capital, economic growth, planetary boundaries, circular economy and footprinting -- the book goes on to consider in turn each of the main sustainability challenges that the human race is currently facing. Of these, food production and power generation are the two most obvious issues. Less obvious perhaps to most people, but given equal weighting with these two in the book are steel and clothing production. The latter will perhaps be the biggest eye-opener for many readers; while everyone with the slightest awareness of current global climate change issues will be well aware of the urgent need to reduce carbon emissions from the burning of fossil fuels, perhaps few are aware of the problematic carbon footprint associated with cotton production and the developed world's profligate appetite for endless new clothes.

The book isn't long enough to go into great detail of any of the issues, however, and the author presents only scant statistics to back up his various assertions, many of which are worryingly qualified with the phrase "I believe", as though scientific investigation and the drawing of conclusions from data were a matter for faith rather than rigorous analytical testing of interpretations. Also, there are many issues which the book doesn't mention at all -- the most conspicuous being its failure to highlight the developed world's completely unsustainable obsession with palm oil production for the cosmetics and cleaning product industries, which is currently one of the greatest drivers ( alongside the global meat industry, which does get a mention) of tropical deforestation. Also, despite offering few answers to the problems he describes in the book, the author conveys an optimism for the future of mankind that appears to be wholly unfounded given much of the material that he does present. Let us hope that he is right in this optimism, because one thing he does demonstrate quite effectively is that if we are to achieve anything approaching sustainability, we are going to need a lot more change than can be generated by a few tweaks to domestic power consumption by swapping to low energy light bulbs, or segregating our waste for recycling. It is going to require fundamental rethinks at government level and considerable shifts in what people expect from life, as well as changes in ethical outlooks on a global scale.

All in all, this is useful and fairly readable introduction to a complex topic. Its final 'expanded bibliography' chapter, untitled '100 ideas', also provides an excellent collection of references and web links affording ample opportunities for delving into deeper study of all of the key issues covered in the book (as well as a lot more besides). On its own though, it doesn't give you anything beyond a basic broad overview of the subject, so expect to need to follow up what you find in this book if you want to study this subject seriously.

About the Author

Tradd Cotter is a microbiologist, professional mycologist, and organic gardener, who has been tissue culturing, collecting native fungi in the Southeast, and cultivating both commercially and experimentally for more than twenty-two years. In 1996 he founded Mushroom Mountain, which he owns and operates with his wife, Olga, to explore applications for mushrooms in various industries and currently maintains over 200 species of fungi for food production, mycoremediation of environmental pollutants, and natural alternatives to chemical pesticides. His primary interest is in low-tech and no-tech cultivation strategies so that anyone can grow mushrooms on just about anything, anywhere in the world. Mushroom Mountain is currently expanding to 42,000 square feet of laboratory and research space near Greenville, South Carolina, to accommodate commercial production, as well as mycoremediation projects. Tradd, Olga, and their daughter, Heidi, live in Liberty, South Carolina.

this masterpiece goes into so much detail and has such great photos and instructions

If you have ANY questions on how to grow mushrooms, this is THE book to get! While many books I've been reading have lightly touched on the subject, this masterpiece goes into so much detail and has such great photos and instructions, after reading it cover to cover, I immediately started earmarking trees for mushrooms growing and planning which varieties I'm going to order! Coming from a laboratory background (molecular biology/protein biochemistry), I am very impressed with his level of scientific detail and his skill at showing how even an amateur without lab experience can setup his/her own lab and do so sterile and cheaply! The best part about this book was his details on keeping your cultures going by using rolled up cardboard and plastic bags, it's brilliant! As much as I enjoyed Stamets' books, I found this one to be easier to read and more user-friendly.

space mushrooms anyone?

There is nothing this book does not cover. It is informative, well written, and comprehensive. If you need a science fair project, read this book. If you are a grower and need information about certain strains of fungi, read this book.

Tradd's enthusiasm for fungi shines through on every page. Just in the first few pages you feel ready to respond to Tradd's invitation to expand on the information in the book and start growing mushrooms yourself. Tradd does a good job explaining the various uses for fungi with helpful photos. One of my favorite ideas explained was inoculating wooden cutting boards to provide natural antimicrobial properties; a living cutting board with an immune system.

This is a great read for anyone interested in the unceasingly interesting world of mushrooms.

Home-scale to commerical-scale mushroom growing

I've been lucky enough to hear Tradd speak in person a few times, and his lectures are always visually appealing, intellectually revealing, and completely inspiring. His book is more of the same --- which is to say awesome!

I've been particularly wanting more information on rafts, totems, and propagating mushrooms on cardboard, and this book form of the lectures I'd attended didn't disappoint. In addition to providing step-by-step directions (with great diagrams and photos) on those topics, the text provided additional home-scale experiments that I'm itching to try, including propagating shiitakes using stacked rounds, raising oyster mushrooms on old clothes and coffee grounds, and producing homegrown morel spawn/microbe slurry for outside inoculation. (If you have no idea what I'm talking about, don't worry --- the beginning of the book has great information to bring beginners up to speed.)

The last third of the book consists of species-by-species cultivation accounts, and I'll save that for more intensive reading later. For now, this book is one of the few titles --- about three to five per year --- that contains such a breadth and depth of information that it merits a permanent place on my bookshelf.

For those of you new to mushrooms, this is probably the book I'd recommend reading first. It's like a combination of the inspiring accounts of Mycelium Running with the hands-on information of Stamets' older text, but with a more homestead-scale appeal. But I should warn you that you'll need to commit serious time to reading Tradd's chapters slowly and in order since my initial skim was a bit disappointing --- raising more questions than it answered. Only after I read every word did the true wonder of the book gel together into a beautiful whole. So even if you're an intermediate mushroom growing, start with chapter one and prepare to be inspired!

Typical Riyria fun

I enjoyed this short story from Michael Sullivan very much. In fact, I have loved all of the Riyria stories that Sullivan has produced. And, finally, I now know the correct way to pronounce Riyria. The story was interesting and the characters compelling. This is the first audio book I’ve listened to so it was a difference experience than I am used to. Narrator Tim Gerard Reynolds did a great job on all the voices. I recommend this book for anyone who likes the Riyria series and and indeed anyone who likes the fantasy genre.

Back in the saddle with Royce and Hadrian!

Kristin, a young woman, wants Royce and Hadrian to kidnap her. She'll pay, of course. She wants a man to know she exists. Hoping the plan to disappear, her father the Lord panic, and the young man come to her rescue. What Royce and Hadrian uncover in her place is far more dangerous than a simple job. And a deeper plan than they expected to find.

Tim Gerard Reynolds, once again, is the narrator for our duo. He does an amazing job with the dry humor banter between Royce and Hadrian. His emotion shows for our men, Royce a bit not caring and Hadrian a bit of caring and worry. Along with doing a voice tone difference for Kristin. His pacing is well done. I slipped right into the world of Royce and Hadrian with ease here.

This is the classic Royce and Hadrian we know! Royce cracks me up with his observation of Kristin along with his offhand honesty. We do, for a flash, see a softer side of Royce. *gasp* For a moment as the look crosses his face, but then it's gone. Hadrian is as caring as ever. He just can't say no. And the tall tale 'easy job' he always things he's getting them into becomes so much more. We get to see Hadrian's talent with disarming and a quick look at him with a sword.

Do you have to read others before this? No. This one can stand on it's own. It will give you a great feel for the characters personalities. If you loved this story, I highly suggest picking up all the books in the world with them. This is what you'll get.

There are hints to Royce and Hadrian, how they are now along with touches of their history or hinting at a history is present. There's even a drop referencing The Jester, nothing big but a nice way to tie everything together.

Michael has done a wonderful job with the duo here. Boy, this story really re-awoke my love for the characters.

Very fun fantasy read and stand alone well.

This was a well done short story featuring Hadrian and Royce from the Riyria Chronicles. I got this on audiobook for free from Audible.com. This can be read as a stand alone and was very entertaining and ironic. I enjoyed it a lot.

This story has a lot of the clever banter, which these two characters are known for. The story seems pretty straightforward (and a bit ridiculous) to start but as things unfold you find out that there are many layers to this heiress’s simple request.

Overall a very fun and entertaining read and free! I would definitely recommend to fantasy fans who enjoy some humor and mystery in their stories. This made me want to go up and pick up the only Riyria book I haven’t read yet; The Death of Dulgath.

Strong on front line logisitics

Very well described the "tables of weights and measures" the Union established for company, battlation, regiments up through to Corps. Author clearly brought out and justified his conclusions about field commmanders keeping their trains from interfering with movement of tactical units in the North and showed the South's poorer management of these factors. Requirements for horses plus the hay and grain staggered a reader. What was lacking, although the author obviously focused on the front's logistics management and made excellent presentation, was railroad support, the natinal supply base ordering and contractng - the quartermastering done by the highest echelons of both sides.

A great little book

A very analytical look at the logistic numbers for the Gettysburg campaign. While not directly stated its very clear what a poor job Lee did of conducting the campaign up to the battle. Full of lots little insights about the events leading up to the battle.

Mistitled and poorly written collection of quotes

The only real value of this little book is that it gathers together a lot of references in the record regarding logistics in the field (e.g. how many wagons, rations). If one is willing to plod through the 118 pages of text one can glean some useful factoids. Other than that, though, it's a poor piece of work. It's basically just a collection of quotes with very little real analysis or any overview.

The writing is sophomoric and there are many typos and even misspellings (geez, any word processing software could have fixed typos and misspellings). The title is also misleading as this is not anything approaching a comprehensive study of logistics in the Civil War. In the first place it only looks at logistics at the field level so there's nothing about the railroads, warehouse systems, or the like. Second, after some general discussion of things like rations in the first fifty pages, the rest of the book is about the Gettysburg campaign and only concerns the Army of the Potomac and the Army of Northern Virginia within a month or so of the battle.

If you can get a copy of this used for very little money then it might be worth having but don't buy it at full price and don't expect to get a good overview of Civil War logistics.
